The Brothers GRIMM

December 01, 2020

Anatopik takes you back to your childhood by telling you many wonderful tales, including those of the GRIMM brothers such as Hansel & Gretel, Little Red Riding Hood, Snow White and the 7 Dwarfs, Goldilocks and The Town Musicians of Bremen.

The Grimm brothers, Jacob and Wilhelm, were collectors of German-language tales. Jacob studied to become a Philologist (a specialist in historical studies: grammar, linguistics, etc.). Wilhelm chose to become a literary critic. They became professors at the University of Berlin. They published a first edition of the volume "Tales of Childhood and Home" on December 20, 1812, consisting of 86 stories including Hansel and Gretel.

The publication of Grimm's tales was banned by the Allies in 1945. The first reason was that the violence written in the tales was partly responsible for the atrocious acts committed by the Nazis. The second was that some of the texts contained anti-Semitic remarks, for example "The Jew in the Thorns"

Hansel and Gretel is a fairy tale written in 1812 by the Brothers Grimm. This tale tells the adventures of two children abandoned in the forest by their father and stepmother due to lack of food. While trying to find their way, the children see a house made of gingerbread and other sweets and start eating it.

The occupant of the house turns out to be a cannibalistic witch. She invites them into the house to feed and eat them. The children will show great courage to push her into the fire and then escape with her riches.

This tale may have similarities with some passages from other tales. Let's take the example of Baba Yaga, a cannibalistic witch who also feeds children with the aim of eating them.

Chaperon by Yunco - Fall-Winter Collection 2008-2011_2015-2018
🐺 🐺 🐺

Yunco's Chaperon is the emblematic motif of the Anatopik brand. It has been a great success which has allowed the creation of 4 different editions: one in 2008, another in 2011 and 2015 and then a last one in 2018.

Little Red Riding Hood is an oral folk tale readapted by the Grimm brothers in 1697. It tells the story of a little girl walking in the forest to bring her grandmother a piece of cake and butter. On the way, she meets a wolf who will, at the end of the story, eat her and her grandmother. Fortunately for them, a hunter will come to save them by opening the wolf's belly.

At the time of Charles Perrault, the hood worn by Little Red Riding Hood was a popular and bourgeois feminine hairstyle that had gone out of fashion. From this, we understand that Little Red Riding Hood represents the desire of the village protagonists to want to distinguish themselves socially.

“Pull the peg, the bobbin will fall”

These are words that have no meaning and an expression that is like a magic formula. It is Perrault who invented it and who also invented this strange closure. With this fanciful vocabulary, he gives his story an old and childish character (in fact, bobbin and bobbin winder exist but are used for sewing or lace and the peg is a bookbinder's tool).

7 dwarves by Chloé Rémiat - Fall-Winter 2017 Collection
🍎 🍎 🍎

In front of the beautiful Snow White, the dwarves are in admiration... Sometimes hanging on her every word listening to the famous tales of our childhood, sometimes gaping at her talents as a juggling apple. Only Grumpy, in his corner, doesn't want to do anything like the others! A humorous and naive illustration by Chloé Rémiat.

This tale tells us the story of a young princess with skin as white as snow, lips as red as blood and hair as black as ebony. Her stepmother, a woman very jealous of her beauty, wants to make her disappear. She asks a hunter to take her into the forest and kill her. The hunter, not wanting to kill her, lets her escape into the woods.

Snow White discovers a little house where she eats and rests. This house is that of the 7 dwarves. She will tell them her story and the dwarves agree to keep her in exchange for household chores.

But soon the wicked stepmother learned that Snow White was still alive. Indeed, this wicked woman had a mirror that told her every day who was the fairest in the kingdom. In a rage, she disguised herself as a merchant and sold Snow White a poisoned apple. Snow White bit into the apple and fell unconscious.

The dwarves, returning from the mine, were unable to revive her and placed her in a glass coffin at the top of the hill. A prince passed by and fell under her spell. He received permission from the dwarves to take her to his kingdom. On the way, one of the bearers stumbled, which allowed Snow White to spit out the piece of apple and wake up and marry the prince.

According to Erik Pigani , a psychotherapist, the tale describes the stages of puberty in young girls. The first queen, Snow White's mother, pricks her finger and drops three drops of blood on the white snow before dying some time later in childbirth. It is a scene at the very beginning of the story, preparing the young girl for her future, which echoes the innocence of childhood that is lost with the red color of menstruation, and the beginning of sexuality but also the possibility of conception. The symbolism of the apple refers to the forbidden fruit of Genesis. Biting into the apple marks the passage between the carefree life of childhood and that of adulthood. (According to Wikipedia)

Frightened by this idea, the donkey took the road to Bremen, he thought he could become a musician there, in order to grow old peacefully. On the way, he met a dog who was whining, he was moaning that he could no longer run, no longer hunt, so his master wanted to knock him out. Goldilocks by Chloé Rémiat - Fall-Winter 2019 Collection
🐻 🐻 🐻
Goldilocks is a tale of Scottish origin taken up by the Grimm brothers.
This tale tells us about a little girl with golden hair who got lost in the woods after wandering too far from home. The little girl discovered a house and found it very comfortable. She climbed in through the open window and settled in.
She will taste the soups, test the chairs and even the beds. But when the inhabitants of the house came back (a family of bears), she woke up with a start and ran away as fast as she could. She found her home again thanks to the advice that the little bear shouted to her.
Did you know?

The bear is the folkloric Celtic emblem, of Scottish origin, it represents the warrior. But it is also the emblem of Berlin, where it is found in many forms (statues...).

Keep your childlike soul, keep dreaming!!!
